From 25 to 27 September, Marina Vela Barcelona will host this sporting event, set to become Spain’s leading offshore regatta with international recognition.
For the second year in a row, Marina Vela is organising, together with Skipper Club Náutico and Difusión Náutica, the new edition of the Golden Cup Barcelona Barcelona Marina Vela. The new marina in Barcelona thus becomes the perfect setting to welcome the Mediterranean’s best offshore sailors, thanks to its nautical services, its brand-new facilities and its unbeatable location in the Port of Barcelona.
The new edition will set sail today Friday, 25 September, from Marina Vela, at 5:00 PM, and although a 220-nautical-mile course via Mallorca had been planned, it will ultimately cover 132 nautical miles, on the Barcelona–Blanes–Barcelona–Blanes–Barcelona route, due to weather conditions.
The decision to change the route is based on the advantages this option offers, as coastal sailing prevents the sea from building up, runs past the ports of Maresme, and is a shorter course in stages. In addition, it allows, if deemed appropriate, for it to be shortened even further to 2 stages (Barcelona–Blanes–Barcelona) and/or for the start to be postponed if necessary.
The Golden Cup Barcelona Marina Vela counts towards the Spanish Singlehanded and Doublehanded Cup, and is open to cruising yachts with full crews. It is led by the president of Club Náutico Skipper, Enrique Curt, who has promoted major benchmark regattas in the country, such as the Copa del Rey, the Atlantic Grand Prix and the Ruta de la Sal.
In order to minimise health risks, the Organising Committee has been forced to suspend social events and will apply the strict protocol established by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation itself. The Golden Cup once again places Barcelona at the heart of offshore sailing.
