The event consists of two regattas, which are among the most important in the Mediterranean Mini 6.50 Class. There are nearly 40 entrants. In the first regatta, they set course for Mallorca.

Nearly 40 entrants will depart today from Marina Vela Barcelona with the aim of competing in the first of the two regattas organized by the Base Mini Barcelona FNOB (Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing). SOLO MED 1 consists of 160 nautical miles, finishing in Sa Rápita (Mallorca). On April 10, the second regatta, SOLO MED 2, will start from Sa Rápita towards Tabarca (Alicante), returning to the Balearic Islands, continuing towards the Columbretes (Castelló), and finishing at Marina Vela Barcelona (650 miles).

Regarding the regatta starting today, Tuesday, SOLO MED 1 will see sailors racing for approximately 36-48 hours. David Escudé, Sports Councilor for the Barcelona City Council and president of the FNOB, explained yesterday during the regatta presentation that “we want to introduce offshore sailing to the general public, who often only see the sea as a place to sunbathe at the beach. And Barcelona is the perfect location for this, both due to the facilities we have and the involvement of nautical and sporting institutions and entities.”

This SOLO MED serves as preparation for the Mini Transat, the legendary solo Atlantic crossing that takes place every two years. It is completed without assistance or land contact, and requires participation in regattas such as SOLO MED to log miles. Anna Corbella, who competed in 2009 and is currently the director of SOLO MED, commented that “this regatta belongs to the official circuit, and for sailors, it is a privilege to start the season in our waters and add 810 nautical miles.”
