After 7 days of crossing, the 11 sailboats of the new edition of Stella Oceani

Led by the captain, YouTuber and creator of Beyond the seas, Paula Gonzalvo, arrived at Marina Vela Barcelona, guided by stars and lighthouses and without using the GPS throughout the journey. The new edition brought together more than 70 crew members and has traveled more than 500 miles, and the most accurate sailboat in calculating its geographical position with Sextant has won, not the fastest.

The winner was the sailboat Bali II, the most accurate in calculating its latitude and longitude both by dead reckoning, bearings and observation with a sextant upon arrival at Marina Vela. A very close competition as the Estel sailboat was just one point away from victory, 73 and 72 points respectively. In third position, with 53 points, was the sailboat Tifon.

The rules of the Journey

They look for the common sense of the navigator who orients himself thanks to the references available to him at all times: lighthouses, stars, planets, sun and moon. A unique competition in which you are allowed to use the engine if the wind stops as well as stop and take a swim if you wish, without having to go as fast as possible, promoting life on board.

The Voyage had more than 500 miles, starting in Marina Vela, it has surrounded the Balearic Islands, and its objective has been to give visibility to cruising sailing, the learning and practice of knowing how to position oneself at sea without any reference to land. , only with the stars and the sextant.

Since the appearance of GPS, traditional navigation has been relegated to the background to the point of being forgotten, which is why Stella Oceani has opted to encourage the use of traditional navigation methods.

The stars chosen by the majority of sailors in this competition have been Jupiter and Mars during sunset. They waited for this moment to make their observations because their observation was easy, even before nautical twilight, and at the same time they were at a distance that allowed some straight lines. height almost 90º. The meridian was also chosen by many sailors because they were all looking for that extra point provided by having obtained latitude and longitude by meridian.
