21 sailboats will navigate without GPS, using a sextant, chart, almanac, and clock, in a voyage where victory goes not to the fastest, but to the sailboat most precise in calculating its geographical position at sea.
From October 2 to 9, the new edition of the Stella Oceani Voyage will take place, led by the captain, YouTuber, and creator of Allende los Mares, Paula Gonzalvo, and hosted by Marina Vela Barcelona.
The voyage, spanning over 500 miles, will circumnavigate the Balearic Islands and the Columbretes Islands, bringing together 21 sailboats that will need to determine their position at sea (latitude and longitude) without any land reference, without GPS, relying solely on the stars, a sextant, and a bearing compass.
In this unique voyage, the fastest sailboat does not win, but rather the one most precise in calculating its geographical position, situating itself on the map and determining its course. Daily observations will be made, both with the sextant and the bearing compass, which will form the basis of the scoring, and the one who achieves the most points will be the winner.
Navigating by the stars across the Mediterranean Sea
21 sailboats with an average of 6 crew members per boat will gather nearly 150 people for a voyage departing from Marina Vela Barcelona on Saturday, October 2, circumnavigating the Balearic Islands, stopping in Ibiza, and returning to Marina Vela on October 9.
Both private and rented sailboats, monohulls and catamarans, have registered for the voyage. A sailor exchange has been set up on the voyage’s website to connect crew members without a boat with those boats needing to complete their crew.
